You might use balls of different sizes (and therefore surface area). The balls should be of equal weight and should be dropped from the same height. The variable is surface area; it is the only difference between the two groups. During the experiment, you will collect data. In this case, you might use a stopwatch to time how long it takes for each ball to reach the ground. You might also calculate the surface area of each ball. By comparing the data collected from the control group with the data collected from the experimental group, you can draw conclusions.

Place the sundial on a level surface along a north-south line such as the one you established while measuring the altitude of Polaris. The vertical shaft, which casts a shadow, is called the gnomon. It should be near the south end of the board. Use a small carpenter’s level to be certain the board is level and the pencil perpendicular to its surface. FIGURE 4 Cover the board with a sheet of white paper. Cut a slit along the south edge of the paper so it will fit around the pencil and tape the paper to the board.

These bodies, with diameters of 1,000 km (600 mi) or less, are known as asteroids or minor planets. It used to be thought that the asteroids were the remnants of a planet that exploded. But it is more likely that they are particles from the original solar system that never came together to form a planet. Meteoroids are believed to be material left by comets that broke up as they moved about the Sun. These particles continue to move along the comet’s orbit—an orbit that crosses Earth’s orbit. When they enter Earth’s atmosphere, they are called meteors.
