They control their temperature by moving from sun to shade. When it is very cold, reptiles go into a state of brumation, which is like hibernation. They curl up under rocks or brush and look as if they are asleep. Their body functions slow down, and they stop eating. Brumating reptiles use very little energy. In spite of not eating during brumation, reptiles lose almost no weight. If the temperature gets extremely hot, reptiles such as the desert tortoise burrow underground or find shelter away from the heat.

Cold-Blooded All reptiles except birds are cold-blooded. This doesn’t mean that their blood is cold. It means that they can’t make their own body heat.
